Chapter Six

A Glimpse of What Lay Ahead

The next couple of weeks went by in a blur, the two women visiting various group homes and meeting nephilims in need. Lea was more infuriated by the process with every passing minute. She’d met the children, but it didn’t seem there were many available foster or adoptive parents to meet. The few they did meet with didn’t seem appropriate enough to parent one of Froggy’s pets, much less a special child. Where do they get these stupid people from?

The only thing Lea knew for certain was she and Sophie grew closer and closer. Lea was surprised when, one day after work, Sophie asked if she’d like to go to dinner or for a drink. She agreed without a second thought. They decided to go home and freshen up, and Lea would pick Sophie up in an hour.

Once she made it home, Lea took a quick shower and threw on a pair of jeans and a dressier shirt than she would normally wear. She wanted to look nice, yet casual. As she stood in front of the bathroom mirror, she contemplated how to wear her flat brown hair. All she could do was think about looking as good as possible for Sophie, but she was nervous as a cat—well, not her fat cat, who lounged on the bed. Lea opted to leave her hair down, her bangs brushing against her forehead. She slipped on her round, retro-looking tortoiseshell glasses, deciding to forgo contacts for the night.

“Ta-da!” she proclaimed to Angel. She looked as good as it was going to get without a major overhaul.

Her red Dodge Durango was parked along the curb in front of her house. As she climbed into the car and fastened her seatbelt, she was thankful she’d gone with the red SUV as opposed to the black. San Antonio summers were brutal and made having a black car like driving in an oven even with the A/C on max. Plus, red cars were supposed to be the safest on the road. Lea was nothing if not safe.

Although Sophie had provided Lea with her address, she didn’t need to punch it into her GPS. She’d been there so often, she could drive it without a conscious thought. What would Sophie think if she only knew how many nights I’d spent outside her house while surveilling her?

Lea drove through the outskirts and into a quaint neighborhood with small, well-manicured lawns and plants hanging from front porches. She pulled over in front of the cute buttery-yellow home she’d watched Sophie enter and exit day after day. She recalled how curious she was to see the inside, to see how Sophie lived. But as she was about to get out of the car and make her way to the front door, Sophie came out of the house, waving as she made her way down the walkway.

Sophie wore a lapis-colored, cozy-looking maxi dress that fell against her ankles. The neck was cut just low enough to expose just a peek of her honied flesh.
